Glaucoma-Cataract New Braunfels-Dr. J.T. Kavanagh Fellowship Trained Glaucoma Specialist and Board Certified Ophthalmologist a well-known cataract and glaucoma specialist was the first full-time fellowship-trained glaucoma specialist in the Seguin-New Braunfels-San Marcos triangle. He has performed the first IAccess goniotomy in South Texas. This is a more controlled Micro Invasive Glaucoma surgery than a typical goniotomy performed with a blade, which destroys the blood-aqueous barrier and can lead to inflammation and recurrent bleeding in the anterior chamber.

Dr. Kavanagh performs a high volume of cataract surgery using the latest intraocular lens (IOLs) including Panoptix, Synergy, Vivity, Toric, Depth of focus as well as the new Light Adjustable Lens (LALS). Eye Associates of South Texas has access to both the LenSX and LENSAR Lasers for Femtosecond LASER cataract surgery.

Modern cataract surgery has the advantage of being able to lessen or completely reduce the need for glasses after cataract surgery. It is also possible to improve glaucoma control with the use of Micro Invasive Glaucoma surgery at the time of cataract surgery in only minutes more than the cataract surgery itself. Dr. Kavanagh is adept at all MIGS surgeries: Alcon Hydrus, Omni Sight Sciences, IStent, IStent inject, IAccess, KDB Goniotomy, Durysta, and the XEN Gel Microstent by Allergan.

We show you a video below of a combined IAccess and IStent Inject MIGS surgery with basic cataract surgery. It shows the patency of the trabecular bypass both by the IStent Inject device and the IAccess goniotomy trephine.

THE HEALTH EXAM YOU DIDN’T KNOW YOU NEEDED

Some of the leading causes of blindness—such as glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy—can begin without any symptoms. That’s why Eye Associates of South Texas and the American Academy of Ophthalmology urge all healthy adults to get an eye exam at age 40, even if their vision seems fine. Early signs of disease and changes in vision may start to happen at this age.

WOMEN’S EYE HEALTH & SAFETY MONTH

Prevent Blindness has designated April as Women’s Eye Health and Safety Month. This important initiative aims to increase awareness about eye diseases and conditions that disproportionately affect women.  Why are women at higher risk?  For some women, fluctuations in hormones due to pregnancy, perimenopause or menopause can bring on such changes.
