San Antonio Ophthalmologist Vivity is Here!

Dr. J.T. Kavanagh of Eye Associates of South Texas implants one of the first Vivity (Alcon AcrySof® IQ Vivity™ ) intraocular lens (IOL) during cataract surgery in San Antonio, Texas. The patient was tired of not being able to see secondary to cataracts and of having to wear “granny glasses” to read. The patient also expressed a desire to be able to drive at night without the haloes and glare she had begun to have with the onset of her cataracts.

Always at the forefront of cutting-edge technology, Dr. Kavanagh after comparing all available cataract IOLs, he decided along with the patient that the new Vivity IOL would satisfy her desire to see without reading glasses and give her the best “glare free” vision during nighttime driving after cataract surgery.

The new Vivity IOL is a non-diffractive range of focus intraocular lens, it is the only IOL in this class. There is also a toric version of the IOL that allows correction of the patient’s astigmatism. It uses a new X-WAVE technology to give excellent distance and intermediate vision, and functional up-close vision. The technology relies on two smooth surface transition elements on the anterior surface of the IOL that work simultaneously to give a range of focus versus distinct focal points.  The Vivity IOL was found in clinical trials to give patients good distance (94%) and good intermediate vision (92%) without glasses.

The huge advantage of this lens (IOL) is that patients reported low levels of starbursts, halos and glare with a visual disturbance profile equal to the monofocal IOLs. This means improved glare during nighttime driving with the ability to read without glasses too!

Dr. Kavanagh San Antonio Ophthalmologist Vivity implanter is super excited about the new technology and looks forward to offering it to all his cataract patients. This technology allows even patients with mild retinal and glaucoma to benefit from an improved range of vision after cataract surgery.

With offices in: San Antonio Medical Center and San Antonio North Central, New Braunfels, Seguin, Lockhart, Luling, La Vernia, Castroville, Hondo, and Gonzales he is going to make sure all his patients in South Texas have access to this new IOL option in their cataract surgery.
