Vuity-Presbyopia correcting Eyedrop has recently been approved by the FDA as the first and only prescription eyedrop to treat age-related Blurry near vision aka Presbyopia (which derives from the Greek word which means “old eyes”). As we all grow older it is normal not to be able to focus on things that are held closely or when reading, eventually our arms are not long enough to allow us to read without the aid of reading glasses or cheaters. This is due to the age-related hardening of the natural lens of the eye that does not allow it to change shape to accommodate (change focus) so that you can see close objects clearly.
Presbyopia affects over 120 million people in the United States and over 2 billion people worldwide. This new FDA-approved product will give relief to millions of sufferers of this condition of old age. Patients with this condition will first start to note that they will need to hold objects further away, squint while reading or use increasing bright lights to read or turn up the brightness on their phone.
This condition usually affects people in their early to mid-forties. There has not been an FDA-approved eyedrop to treat this condition until NOW! With Vuity being a prescription you will need to see an ophthalmologist or an optometrist to try this new eyedrop. It has been approved for once daily use in both eyes, this will allow you to see better up close without the need for readers (or cheaters) for up to 6 hours with the use of a single eyedrop.
The active ingredient in Vuity is pilocarpine at a strength of 1.25%, this is the same medicine that has been used to treat glaucoma for thousands of years. The mechanism of action is to cause the pupil to constrict (it is a muscarinic cholinergic agonist) and create a pinhole effect of the pupil, to give people a larger depth of focus, this, in turn, allows you to see better up close. In effect, it changes your eye albeit temporarily into having optics like a pinhole camera.
The cost of Vuity according to the manufacturer’s website will be around $75 for a one-month supply if used every day. Of course, you should check with your pharmacy for the exact costs.
