What to Expect After LASIK Eye Surgery

LASIK is a laser eye surgery that reshapes the cornea through a hinged flap created on the cornea.  Because a flap is created instead of removing the tissue, most patients report minimal irritation and faster recovery.

Anesthetic drops are applied to the eye before the procedure to numb the eye, but immediately following your LASIK eye surgery, you may experience burning, itching, or general irritation and discomfort as if something is in it.  You may instinctively want to rub it, but you absolutely must refrain from doing so, otherwise the flap will not heal properly.  Your doctor will prescribe drops for your eyes for comfort and to assist in healing and mild pain relievers.

If you experience severe pain, if your vision seems to be worsening or if you experience any new or unusual symptoms, you should contact your doctor immediately instead of waiting for your next scheduled appointment.

Your eyes may water or tear, and your vision will probably be hazy or blurry.  Results may vary, but most patients can start to see clearly within a few days.  Your vision may continue to fluctuate within the first few months and may take up to three to six months for it to stabilize.

Other common temporary side effects may include your eyes becoming dry, a sensitivity to light, glares, and haloes, which usually clear up after a few weeks or even months.

Following your procedure, you will have regular follow up appointments with your doctor for at least the first six months, the first within the first 24 to 28 hours.

You may notice an improvement in your vision immediately following your LASIK procedure, however you must remember that your eyes are still healing.  During the first days following your procedure, it is important to avoid direct sunlight and bright lights as much as possible.  Wear sunglasses with UV protection and avoid driving at night while experiencing sensitivity to light. 

Other things to avoid until you receive your doctor’s go ahead include diving (at least 24 hours), non-contact sports (at least 3 days), contact sports (at least 1 month), and swimming and the use of hot tubs/whirlpools (at least 1-2 months).  Also get your doctor’s approval before applying lotions or make-up around the eye to avoid infection.  It is important to avoid getting anything in your eye and avoid them getting bumped or hit.
